How to Boost Clickthrough Rates 14,000%

An interesting article from iMedia on boosting rich media campaigns through well thought-out online ads. It addresses the question of how to make sure your interactive flash banners (those that expand or start playing sound only when the user approves it with a click or mouse-over) get noticed by consumers.

The article outlines five how-to tips (and gives an example of an ad that boosted click through rates by 14,600%):
  • Make the design simple and intuitive
  • Make sure the message is simple
  • Make it work organically with the product
  • Don't look desperate
  • Build on what has worked before

The bottom-line: don't assume that "if you build it, they will come". Your basic question should be - would I, honestly, click on the ad? Of course, you also need to put it up on the right websites so you should run it "on a wide network of sites that optimizes for the metric you're looking for," or buy the best ad real estate that you can. But either will only work if you put in the extra effort to create a great, memorable rich media banner ad.

Another aspect that needs to be considered when it comes to campaign CTRs comes from a MediaPost article that discusses banner ad location. Apparently, according to MarketingSherpa research, users don't even see most ads on a Web page, particularly if they're below the fold. Ads placed above the fold are visible to 100% of site visitors but only 60% of them actually see it. Below the fold units are visible to approximately 70% of viewers but only a quarter of them actually see the ads. The numbers for columns and spots on the far left side of the page are even lower, naturally.
