Coupon Usage Across Generations

Retail Merchandiser reports on a CoolSavings.com consumer survey regarding coupon usage. The main finding is that "coupons are as popular as ever among every age group."
  • Older consumers use coupons most consistently, led by the 55+ age group (65% of them use coupons on every shopping trip vs. 51% among 25-34 year olds)
  • The age group that uses the most coupons and saves the most money is 35-44 year old (61% use 5-20 coupons per shopping trip and 35% report coupon savings of $10-$20 per shopping trip)
  • Coupon sources - the 35-44 year old group, more than any, relies on newspapers (47.8%), while all other groups favor a combination of sources, including Internet sites, mail and newspapers.
A somewhat surprising finding is that couponing is an exceptionally effective way to encourage consumers to try new products. All five age groups surveyed were extremely willing to try a new product or brand if they had a coupon for it (more than 90% were willing to try a new brand or product with a coupon.)

Finally, in terms of scheduling, the primary shopping day for everyone was Saturday, while the 55+ set favored Thursday.
