Back to School Spending to Rise 7%

Just in time for those of you who can't wait for summer vacation to be over, a survery by Brand Keys (covered in Chief Marketer) shows that on average, consumers expect to spend $590 for back-to-school clothing and supplies. The estimated spending increase of 7% will bring spending during this year's back-to-school season to total almost $18 billion.

Meanwhile, the consumer mind set is "which retailer offers the best prices for the things I need most?" The result is "an uneven distribution in terms of which retailers will be the beneficiaries of consumers shopping this season." More specifically, discount stores are preferred by 70%, department stores - 60%, office supply stores - 45%, specialty outlets - 40%, online stores - 35% and catalogs - 15%.
