Several surprising statistics explain why retailers should look into expanding their product lines, advertising in men's magazines and revising their store designs, if they aren't doing so already. For example:
- Men are expected to outspend women by 60% on "self-gifting" (that is, treating themselves to goodies) in 2007
- Single men are outspending their female counterparts in several categories, including all areas of entertainment, furniture, appliances and household textiles
- Men are responsible for 70% of their own apparel purchases, up from 48% in 1998
- Roughly 42.2 million men are considered the primary shoppers for their households (roughly 20% of households)
- Male shoppers make more spontaneous purchases than their female counterparts
