Shopping Now Cool Among Men

Following up on last week's post about men in grocery stores, this post will be about men and shopping in general.

According to this article, we will soon see men meandering leisurely through the mall, not just going through their  typical targeted shopping procedures. According to Paco Underhill "...the era of the traditional male 'hunter' shopper - while they're still out there - is fundamentally changing."

Several surprising statistics explain why retailers should look into expanding their product lines, advertising in men's magazines and revising their store designs, if they aren't doing so already. For example:
  • Men are expected to outspend women by 60% on "self-gifting" (that is, treating themselves to goodies) in 2007
  • Single men are outspending their female counterparts in several categories, including all areas of entertainment, furniture, appliances and household textiles
  • Men are responsible for 70% of their own apparel purchases, up from 48% in 1998
  • Roughly 42.2 million men are considered the primary shoppers for their households (roughly 20% of households)
  • Male shoppers make more spontaneous purchases than their female counterparts
